Description
Perilla – Shiso (Perilla frutescens) is a very popular annual herb in Japan and other Asian countries. It has quite a unique aroma that grows on you the more often you taste or smell the herb. The growth habit is similar to basil, but the leaves are slightly tougher.
Sowing:
May to June in a modular tray in the greenhouse.
Sow two seeds per module about 1cm deep and about 5 to 6 weeks later plant out into the garden or in a greenhouse.
Spacing:
Between rows: 30cm
Between plants in the row: 30cm
Approx. Seed count: 20
Initially I only grew them as pretty ornamentals and now I can’t help myself tasting a leaf any time I walk past. For culinary purposes one or two plants would be sufficient. Just like basil it likes warm weather and will produce until October. As an annual plant it has to be sown every year. Apart from slugs there are no other pest or disease problems.
