Chives

1.95

Description

Chives are very easy to grow from seed. It’s a good idea to renew your chives every few years with a fresh batch of plants. There tends to be a build up of Allium diseases if grown for too many years in the same bed.

Sowing:

March – August (10 seeds per cell)

Spacing:

30cm x 30cm

Approx. seed count: 250

Division:

Once established, chives can easily be divided to propagate more plants.  The best time to divide a clump of chives is in late winter or early spring.  Simply dig up the plant while it is dormant and tease the plant apart and leave about 4 to 6 shoots together and replant them either in a pot or directly into the soil.

Chives make an excellent ingredient for cooking and are a great alternative for onions or shallots.  They are available for at least 9 months of the year and their flowers are delicious and beautiful in any salad.  You can simply open up the flowers and sprinkle individual florets over a salad.

Even if you don’t have a garden you can still grow chives in a large pot or basket.  Fill with good compost and water regularly.
